When I was 14 years old I developed muscle spasms and odd pain in my feet. My doctors passed it off as stress, and sent me on my way. By the time I was 16 I started experiencing brain fog. Again, doctors said it was "just stress."
When I was about 19 I developed an odd tightness in my ribs. It felt like I was being stabbed between the ribs, and it took my breath away. My doctor said it was probably caused by the asthma, and he increased my inhaled steroids and put me on prednisone. That helped, for awhile but never for very long.
In my early 20's I developed overwhelming fatigue. Getting up was difficult. Some days simply breathing was work. Friends and family told me I was lazy. Doctors accused me of making it up.
Symptoms continued to increase until, eventually I lost most of the feeling in my left leg. At that point a doctor told me that I "might" have some sort of neurological disorder. But, my insurance denied all the requested tests. They claimed I was too young for the problems my doctor was testing for.
Finally, at 36 years old, I lost the ability to walk, see, and drive. Sometimes I couldn't dress myself, or stand up. All in the space of about 2 hours.
They diagnosed me with Secondary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis, and told me it was time for a nursing home.
The rest, as they say, is history. Armed with nothing more than a disease name, I started learning about autoimmune disorders.
As I learned, I healed. As I healed, I went back to school and continued to learn.
Today, I am recovered. I hike, lift weights, keep up with my kids, play sports, and live my life. And -- it's my mission to empower others to do the same.
I did it. YOU can do it, and I will help you.
